Charms are among the oldest kinds of jewellery. Long before they were decorative, people carried small carved objects for protection and luck, and ancient Egyptians were buried with amulets to guide them into the afterlife.
Charms became fashion in the 19th century, thanks largely to Queen Victoria. She wore and gave charm bracelets, including one with an enamel heart for each of her children, and after Prince Albert's death in 1861 she wore mourning charms in his memory. Her style spread through Europe's upper classes, and the charm became something you wore to say who you were.
The tradition grew again after World War II, when soldiers brought small trinkets home from abroad for their sweethearts, who collected them on bracelets as keepsakes.
